Sprout has a room!!!

I can’t remember if I mentioned it before, but we moved about a month ago to our first house (well, apartment actually) which accounts for the infrequent posts. We ordered the furniture to Alex’s room in April, before he was born and they said it would take 4-6 weeks. Well the 4-6 weeks passed and no furniture so I contacted the store and they said they should be arriving. They didn’t. So I contacted them again. And again. And again… Well turns out someone screwed up (still can’t figure if it was the store or the Belgian rep) and Kidsmill had never received our order!!!! So the furniture was only delivered last Friday (speedy delivery after we threatened to get it somewhere else, otherwise we’d only have it in September). I was outraged, but that passed once I saw it :) I think it’s beautiful, big and solid and will grow with sprout. Definitely a good investment. Only thing now is we never painted the nursery because we had to move in a bit of a hurry (less than a week after buying the place). A little girl lived here before so Alex has a yellow and purple room for the moment. Well, at least it isn’t pink!

Now we need colour! We won’t paint until around X-mas probably, but I’d like to add colour without clashing with the purple especially (any suggestions more than welcome!!). Will have to look around a bit to find bedding, colourful pillows and some artwork. Can’t wait to see it completed, but I love it already. As you can see, the Poang I mentioned before didn’t make it into his room. We did buy it (and love it), but it’s in the living room and we put our old clic-clac in his room for now.

We’ve been putting him in his new bed during the day (that is IF we manage to get him down) and at night before we go to bed. He goes back into our room afterward. We hope he’ll start getting used to it that way.

Nursery – Take II

Now that I’ve actually been looking around more, I’ve had some changes of heart regarding the nursery: The Stokke Sleepi bed seemed like an excellent idea, but at around €900 it’s quite pricey. Plus, now that I’ve actually seem one like, I sort of fell out of love with it. Another change is the rocking chair. i went to Ikea and sat in it and realised it’s not too comfy for my size (maybe I’m just too small for it?). Since I really hate the look of the gliders sold at maternity stores (plus they’re freakin’ expensive), so we’re most likely going with the Ikea Poang chair which is really comfy and cheap too! I’ll probably be making different covers for it, but that will be a longer-term project.

As for the furniture, we want something that will grow with sprout, at least until he’s around 7yrs old, so we’ll probably not go with white. Now, I love white in a baby’s room, but not so much for a toddler. Here are some of the rooms we’ve loved:

block-oakblock-walnut

This is an Oak and Walnut version of the “Block” room from Kidsmill (a Dutch company). It is solid and semi-solid wood, with all natural paints. The crib transforms into an infant bed, so it would grow with sprout. I also think it is neutral looking, so easy to personalise and not get sick of. We both prefer the Walnut version, but are uncertain if it would be too dark for a kid’s room.

Another one we like from the same company is “Kubus” in white oak.

This one has more or less the same characteristics as the previous ones, with the added bonus that you could add on furniture to it, such as night table, desk, teen bed, shelves, etc.

They all seem really well made and long-lasting, which I think is difficult to find nowadays when everything seems to be “disposable”. I love that it’s all natural materials and it is much less expensive than the stokke ensemble.

For the colour scheme, I personally like blues, greens, browns and whites. I’m thinking of making the bedding and other textiles myself and avoid the over-cutesy or over-muted baby sets. Plus, we don’t want bumpers because they pose a risk for cot death and most/all baby sets include them.

Some fabrics I like:

Of course, we’ll only be getting the crib for now because we have still to find a house and therefore a nursery… But it’s still nice to think about these things :)

Nursery – Take 1

Nursery – Take 1 by sandramorim

We don’t actually have a house yet, but since the nesting instinct is really starting to kick in, I can’t help but play with possible nursery scenarios.

I’d like something simple, clean and modern that can grow with our little sprout. I love the Stokke Sleepi that can convert from a bassinet all the way to a toddler bed and then into couch and/or chairs. It is a bit pricey though and sheets will have to be oval… but I couldn’t resit adding it to my style board :) . I also love (and we’re most certainly going to get) the Stokke Tripp Trap chair. Again, it grows with the child, so it can go from being a high-chair into a (pre) teen chair.

I don’t know about the colour of the furniture yet though… I like white, but am afraid he’ll outgrow it fast once he’s out of the crib. I like dark wood, but am also afraid it will look too dark. Any suggestions?

I think the general colour scheme will be shades of  blues, browns and greens, with some more colourful accents thrown in. Now let’s just hope we find a home soon!
