Welcome! Here you will find information on having a baby and parenting as an expat in Belgium, multilingualism, multiculturalism and a whole lot more. If you’re new here, grab yourself something to drink, make yourself comfortable and let’s get to know each other. I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
My name is Sandra and I’m the mama of 2 beautiful, active boys born in 2009 and 2012. I’m a Portuguese-American expat living in Brussels, Belgium since August 2006 when my husband and I, living in different cities in Portugal, decided to give this famously gray city a chance. We are part of what sometimes feels like a handful of people who plan to stay here long term. Brussels is our home and where we plan to raise our boys.
This blog is the tale of an expat going into parenthood in Brussels. When I found out I was pregnant with Sprout 1, I immediately went online looking for information, preferably in French, and was surprised not to find much. I then decided to start this blog and share what I find along my journey through parenthood.
My aim is to help others navigate Brussels (and beyond) with kids, and to share my experience with others going through pregnancy and parenthood in Belgium or elsewhere. I hope to make your life easier sharing information I couldn’t find anywhere else, along with snippets of the story of our days.
Before becoming a full-time mama I worked in the legal field as a lawyer and as a consumer rights activist and in my last job I did project management and advocacy work for a Fair Trade NGO in Brussels. Social justice and environmental issues continue to be one of my biggest passions.
I’m also very passionate about childhood, child psychology and early childhood education. I believe in the importance of respecting the child as a complete human being. I love to learn right alongside my boys and with the many mamas and papas I come across and am inspired by. I want to make clear, despite my strong ideals, I truly believe we are all doing the best we can and know to show our children love and guidance. I do not intend to alienate anyone nor is it my habit to pass judgment.
I also love sewing and working with my hands, and you’ll find that slip into here every now and again.
If you’d like to know a bit more about me, you can see an interview with me here.
You can also find me writing for Fans of Flanders.
You are most welcome to link to my blog, but please refrain from using my words or pictures without my permission.
